JUST BULLS

30 September - 09 November 2016

INVITED BY DANIEL WIESENFELD

HilbertRaum is pleased to present a group of life-size paintings of rodeo bulls by New York based artist, Arthur Cohen. The exhibition is curated by Daniel Wiesenfeld.

Cohen has created these works without the use of brushes or other traditional painting tools, devising instead a technique best described as highly skilled finger painting. In the works exhibited the flailing bulls are trapped by the physical limits of the canvas. Existing in an unfamiliar conceptual space the animals are violent, terrifying and vulnerable. Struggling to escape from the language of painting they become just another compositional element, sometimes even disappearing within the paint itself. Cohen thus enacts the historically uneasy relationship between subject matter and art.

Arthur Cohen is a lifelong New Yorker. His work is in numerous collections, including the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Dallas Museum of Art. He has been the recipient of many grants and fellowships, among them, the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Fellowship, the National Endowment for the Arts Visual Artists Fellowship, and the New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship. This is his first exhibition in Berlin.
